I've been reading Harry Potter fanfiction where Hermione waves her hand in the air in her eagerness to answer questions, and it reminded me of a parent-teacher interview I had with my middle son's teacher in 6th grade.

"He wants to answer all the questions," said Mr D. "I had to explain to him that I know he knows the answer, but that everyone else in the class needs a chance to show what they can do so that I can teach them too."

Apparently my son considered this reasonable but then he went away and came back with a chart of hand-signals so that Mr D would know if he 'knew the answer', 'knew the answer but had something interesting to add', 'was not signalling about the answer but had something different to say' etc. There were about 10 signals.

I started to laugh. Then Mr D said plaintively, "I suppose I should feel honoured that he thinks I'm smart enough to learn all the signals..." and I just lost it. I laughed until the tears came to my eyes.

I love that boy and Mr D. was the best!

Well here we are at Sunday again. I've been sick all week - cancelled all my appointments in favour of curling up in bed with the cat. Needless to say, I didn't get anything useful done. Yesterday and the day before were the nadir though, I think. Today seems better.

Also, my Mum fell and broke her arm quite badly and is in hospital. Due to leg weakness she normally needs a walker to get around, but with a broken arm she can't use the walker. She has trouble getting leverage to move at all, in fact. She may be stuck in hospital a while. :( At least one good thing is that my Dad and brother have finally persuaded her to get a lift-chair for when she gets home. She's been spending most of her days in the most ergonomically appalling chair and resisting all attempts to improve it.

It's been a long week and it really didn't help that I accidentally ate gluten twice, early in the week. But I did get 3.7 boxes done and - with my elder son Bru's help - a broken desk mostly smashed into binnable pieces and binned. Tomorrow is Bin Night and there is only enough room in it for tonight's kitchen garbage disposal.

I also collected my new washing machine and Bru installed it. I am so happy to finally have a working machine again! It broke the week before Christmas and I was too foggy-brained and broke to sort out what to do about it. But Bru lent me the money last week and I hopped on and won a 6.5kg demo model for under $200 (RRP $649)! Supposedly it had scratches, but the marks were only sticker residue in the end. It works like a dream. No more carting everything to the humid, echoing laundromat and shoving insane numbers of coins in the slots for the priviledge of clean underwear.

Box 1

As predicted, Friday (yesterday) was not a day on which I was up to much. No boxes were unpacked. Today I grabbed an easy one, but at least I did it!

I took pictures but it's now 2am after a minor drama (my kid's car got locked in a parking garage in the city. He took the train home and since it was after midnight and raining I picked him up from the station) I cannot figure out how to post photos here. I'll try again tomorrow. I have to get up early to get him back on the train to collect his car anyway. *sigh* Poor kid.

Added Later:

Full box

Layer of small things

Empty box

I moved house about 6 months ago and I still have boxes everywhere. So tomorrow I plan to start a challenge to myself - I'll unpack a box a day and post what I find here. If I do other work on my home, like painting, I'll post that instead.

It's not really a good day to start tomorrow - I have MS group in the morning and my fortnightly psych appointment in the afternoon. Even worse, my homework this fortnight was to write a letter to my ex about what made me angry in our relationship. Yeah, massive headache after that one, I expect. But there's never a good day to diet, give up smoking or unpack boxes... ;) Might as well start then anyway!

I have had this as an earworm since I heard it on the radio yesterday: Bread's Diary

What makes me happy about this song is that it is about real love - not lust or possessiveness. Sometimes I just wonder so much at the warped things people think show love.

I wish you all could have seen the moon this morning. It was like an illustration from a children's picture book, hanging huge and golden against the pale morning sky. I had to be at the hospital for my MRI at 6.45am and luckily I was able admire it for the whole drive there. What a lovely start to my day.

Today we found my box of bathers! \o/ The ones I had kept out are beginning to lose elasticity which was beginning to make aqua excercise classes tricky!

Well with a sick child I had to miss a club outing today, which is too bad since it sounded fun, but I did a lot yesterday so it's probably for the best. I picked the kid up from school at 10am and by 11am I had fallen back into bed with a surprised groan at how much my body welcomed that. I was asleep soon after, and I slept most of the day, just checking on the kid a couple of times.

It still puts a smile on my face to see this stretch of lino. It was so fiddly, and required so much moving of stuff with the help of eldest child yesterday to get it finished! But now it is down and the kitchen/bathroom space is vastly easier to navigate!

Today my friend J came to visit me - always great to see her! And the knowledge that she was coming spurred me to finally finish laying the kitchen lino and set up a comfy sitting nook. After J left, my youngest and I sat there reading amicably together, cat on my lap, until she had to get ready to go out.

Today I got my tax sorted out. \o/

I bought another armchair on ebay! And then I took the trailer across to pick it up. I like to feel competent. :)

Today I had dumpling soup. I looooove dumpling soup but it is so hard to find a glutenfree version!

8d House: I love your dumplings and your mochi... and your staff. You make me happy!

Lots of things went well today, so I'm giving the day a 'B+', despite the fact it involved a trip to the dentist and a bad drug reaction at the hospital. The kids made it onto the train in time despite oversleeping, I did gentle aquarobics at the pool, I had enough energy to walk to the train station, the new dentist is nice and I made it to both his appointment and the hospital appointment in good time despite tight timing, eldest child was able to pick me up from hospital after the drug reaction and it was his turn to cook dinner so I could nap when I got home. Lots of good things today...

Today my eldest and I moved another bookcase and I cleared most of the back door. All progress makes me happy! :)
