Today was my father's 80th birthday. I was reminded to be grateful for his continued good health (comparatively) when I had to ring a very old friend to say how sorry I was to hear of his father's unexpected passing. During the conversation I also learned that his father had had dementia for some years.

How fortunate I am to have had the chance to wish my father a happy birthday today, and discuss with him such topics as global warming, the recent federal budget and his grandchildren.
