Rats in the wiring

Metaphorical rats, I assure you!
But that's how I described multiple sclerosis to my job provider yesterday. MS strips the insulation from your nerves, I said, but you don't know which ones they'll target, so it's like having rats in your wiring. You're never sure what's going to be flickering from day to day.
And sometimes - although I didn't say this to her - you come to the reluctant realisation that the wiring of a particular section is simply, irretrievably stuffed. You mostly stop flicking the switch because you know that at best it just won't work. At worst you might get an ominous fizzing sound and start an electrical fire, and this is still the only home you've got: you really don't want to burn it down.
Except when you do. But that's another story.
