I'm not American but I have to confess that my eyes are damp after reading the news articles confirming that the US Senate has voted to repeal DADT. Once President Obama signs the relevant documents gay Americans will be able to openly serve their country in the military. I don't know what the real life acceptance will be of this step - prejudice will undoubtedly still exist and being gay will still be stigmatised by some - but at least the choice is there to be open, and the fear of discharge upon discovery will no longer hover over gay servicemen and women.
